Study Finds Soy Isoflavones May Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer

According to a study presented at the Ninth Annual AACR Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference in Philadelphia, increased consumption of phyto-estrogens found in dietary soy could potentially alter the risk of certain types of breast cancer. The researchers from the University at Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute analyzed 683 women with breast cancer and 611 healthy women, comparing their dietary data patterns using a food frequency questionnaire. They found that the highest isoflavone intake was associated with a 30% decrease in invasive breast tumor risk and a 60% decrease in grade 1 tumor risk. However, these findings are not definitive and require further follow-up and confirmation. Nevertheless, the researchers believe that this reduction in risk deserves further investigation.
