A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that a short-term, high-dose supplementation of Folic Acid (folate) may lead to a reduction in blood pressure and improvements in other cardiovascular measures. The study involved fifteen post-menopausal women who were given a daily dose of 15 mg of folate for three weeks. Results showed an average drop in systolic and diastolic blood pressure of 4.5 and 5.3 mmHg, respectively, as well as a decrease in levels of homocysteine, an amino acid linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
The study was conducted by researchers from the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at the Polyclinic of Modena, Italy. While the results are promising, larger, longer-term studies are needed to confirm the findings.
Folate is naturally found in foods such as green leafy vegetables, chick peas, and lentils, while Folic Acid can be obtained from grain products. Many nutritional health supplement providers offer Folic Acid and Super B Complex Supplements for those interested in improving their nutritional health.
