The importance of preselling
If you want to make more money as an affiliate, you must presell.
First, what is preselling? Preselling is both an art and a science. And it’s function is to prepare your reader to buy something. Then when they’re ready, refer them to the product website so they can buy it. If you do it well, it’s completely invisible.
The gist is that you give your reader some useful information. And then refer them to the product website. In a second we’ll talk about how to do actually it. But before we do, you need to know why it’s so important. Some major benefits of this process:
- Preselling creates trust – Once you have your readers’ trust, they will click your links more readily. Which obviously means you’ll make more sales.
- It disarms your reader – When you’re preselling vs. pitching, you’re reader doesn’t feel the need to be guarded. Unguarded reading means they’re not filtering what you say. So your content get absorbed.
- It puts them in a buying mood – Now they’re open to hearing what you’re telling them. And in turn, they’re open to other messages, as well. This includes the sales website you send them to! Sending them to the sales page in this state makes them more receptive to the actual pitch.
- Your commissions go up – Now your reader arrives at the sales page in a buying mood. With a feeling of trust and openness. The only thing that can result is increased sales!
- It increases customer satisfaction – Your referral now feels like they decided to buy. Versus being pitched or convinced. And this leads to greater satisfaction with the product.
- It boosts your profits – Satisfied customers are less like to refund. Less refunds means more affiliate money stays in your pocket.
The need to presell is clear. You make more money. Your customers are happier. It’s a win-win-win!
Now, here’s how preselling works:
OK, now you understand why it’s so important. So, hopefully you’ve decided to start preselling. You’re ready to learn how to do it properly. As I mentioned earlier, it’s both an art and a science.
Mastering the art
First, you have to gain the trust of your reader, so they let their guard down. This can only be accomplished by providing actual value in the information you’re presenting. Now, providing enough info to be useful, but still making them want more – that’s the art of it. So you send them to the product website with a hunger for more of what the product provides. Plus they’re not guarded, so they’re more open and likely to purchase the product.
Part 2 – the Science
There are also several key elements that need to be included.
The first is how you present the information. You’ve got to map out your strategy before you start writing. Your goal is to sell the product you’re promoting. How can providing information accomplish this goal? First, you can provide useful but incomplete information. Or you can give them so much information that it feels overwhelming to do what you’re talking about. Either way, the product sales page solves the problem.
But you can’t link to your affiliate link. You have directly to the home page of the product. This increases your clicks. But how will you earn affiliate commissions if you don’t use your affiliate link? Well, that’s part of the science of this whole process. You use the “covert cookie” strategy.
You also want to link to the sales page from inside your article’s content. Hyperlinked words are clicked more than anything else. And if the words you hyperlink relate, your reader will naturally click them for more information.
Putting all of this together creates a powerful affiliate marketing formula for success.
OK, here’s the not-so-good news:
Doing all of this right is really hard! Let’s look at the skills required to pull it off: Good content. The entire process depends on your being able to provide useful information to your readers. This means you have to be able to write well, and have enough knowledge to be useful. Strategic writing. Yes, you must providing useful content. You also have to present the info in a way that provides real value. And somehow also make them want to learn more. Or provide so much information that they see how hard it will be to implement.
Product selection. You also need to determine what products you’ll be preselling. Even if you can pull off writing and great article. You’ve wasted all your effort if the product doesn’t sell well.
Technical skills. To be most effective you have to use the “covert cookie” method. This is fairly simple – you use a 1 X 1 image and set the “source” to your affiliate link. (But if you do it wrong, you won’t get paid for the traffic you send.)
Wrapping it up:
Now you know exactly how to presell effectively. And doing this increases your affiliate commissions by over 500%! The important thing is to use these techniques for everything you promote as an affiliate. Don’t wait another minute. The effort it takes is well worth the benefits…
